Stress

Stress is our body’s response to pressure or threat. Stress creates a state of worry or mental tension, cause by a difficult situation or one we feel we cannot control.  It is a natural human response and everyone experiences stress to some degree in their lives at some point.

What is Stress?

Stress is our body’s response to pressure or threat. Stress creates a state of worry or mental tension, cause by a difficult situation or one we feel we cannot control.  It is a natural human response and everyone experiences stress to some degree in their lives at some point.

When and Why?

Here are the top ten most stressful life events for adults in the The Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale.

  1. Death of a spouse
  2. Divorce
  3. Marital separation
  4. Imprisonment
  5. Death of a close family member
  6. Injury or illness
  7. Marriage
  8. Job loss
  9. Marriage reconciliation
  10. Retirement

So, it is easy to see that there are numerous reasons why we may feel stressed. The body’s natural inclination is to go into ‘fight or flight’ mode, rousing the body for action flooding the body, with chemicals, such as adrenaline and cortisol, thus cause the feeling of stress.

Chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol can leave us feeling exhausted and even depressed. We can become less in control of our emotions, unable to sleep or become irritable, affecting those around us.  Our performance can be affected, at work, during sport activities or sexual activity.

Prolonged stress and too much cortisol can lead to depression, weight gain, headaches, high blood pressure, digestive problems, heart attack and even cancers, as the acidic nature of cortisol can damage cells.

So How Can I help?

The first thing I will do is spend time listening and learning about your life and the difficulties you are experiencing.  We then work consciously using counselling therapy to build flexibility into thinking, to control areas that can be controlled and to create a tailor-made treatment plan for you.

After this, I will use hypnotherapy to bring about a deep state of relaxation. This activates the parasympathetic system and central nervous system in charge of healing and cell regeneration.  This can bring huge relief. I will then use visualisation, imagery and suggestions to help the subconscious mind eliminate any limiting beliefs, thereby reducing the intensity of the stress or eliminating it altogether.
